India Mates Are Unhappy
With Their 'Sub-Standard'
Nike Kits
In a country where cricket is considered a religion and cricketers are no less than demigods, the Indian cricket team represents a brand that everyone wants to get associated with. Whether it's the team or tournament sponsors, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rakes in a lot of moolah - courtesy the star-studded Indian brigade.
For a team that has been at the pinnacle of the sport for quite some time now, it's only fair that they demand and eventually get the best equipments, kits and facilities. While other things are well in order, it's their sub-standard sponsor kits that seem to have irked the Indian cricketers lately.
Nike has been associated with the Indian cricket team since 2006. But, the sports giant has recently got into trouble with the Indian stars complaining about their kits. The top two BCCI officials, Rahul Johri and Ratnakar Shetty, have raised the issue to Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).
“It (Nike's clothing) has come up for discussion in last CoA meeting and chairman CoA (Vinod Rai) took it very strongly. The team cannot have sub-standard kits and we will be engaging with Nike and he has asked to put our case strongly. We have to engage with them, we will have a meeting with them (Nike) next week and try to resolve it at earliest," Johri told the Indian Express.
In 2016, Nike India had paid a whopping Rs 30 crores to continue their association with the Indian cricket team until 2020. As per their contract - that runs from 1st Jan, 2016 to 30th September, 2020 - Nike India pays a staggering Rs 87,34,000 for every match Team India plays.
Meanwhile, India's jersey that featured 'Star' for several years saw 'OPPO' named as the official jersey sponsors a few months ago. OPPO, the smartphone manufacturer, paid Rs 1,079 crores for a five-year deal.
